Why Knowing How Isn’t Quite the Same as Being Ready: Good Work in Architecture and Construction

What does it take to do good work in architecture and construction?
Technical expertise certainly matters. Workers need to understand design, materials, codes, safety, software, and the physical realities of building. But when we spoke with students and professionals in architecture and construction as part of our Good Work Value Alignment Study, they consistently described good work as something broader. One professional put the distinction particularly clearly:
“A good job meets expectations, but good work adds value, shows initiative, and frequently improves the project for everyone involved.”
Across our conversations, good work involved not only knowing how to complete a task, but knowing how to respond when the task—or the circumstances surrounding it—changed.
Good work requires more than technical expertise
Participants described strong workers as curious, precise, communicative, reliable, creative, and able to anticipate what might happen next. One professional described good architects this way:
“Good architects [are] curious and precise. … They listen. They can turn a crazy idea into something real without cutting corners. So that’s a combination of, you know, practical as well as sort of creativity and interpretation.”
That last point is particularly important. Creativity in architecture and construction isn't simply about having an interesting idea. It is about figuring out how to make that idea work within real constraints—and doing so without sacrificing quality.
Participants also emphasized the importance of asking questions. One professional explained:
“a good and bad worker can work on the same exact tasks, but the good worker will show a keen eye for asking even the redundant questions. It doesn't hurt to ask.”
Every job site is different. Asking questions can therefore be a form of professional judgment: recognizing what you don't know before uncertainty becomes a mistake, delay, or safety problem.
The classroom provides a foundation. The field adds something different.
Students and employers both valued formal education. Degrees and credentials provide foundational knowledge and, for some roles, are essential for entering the profession. As one construction professional explained:
“Having a degree or a credential definitely matters, especially for roles like engineers, project coordinators, surveyors.”
But participants consistently distinguished having a foundation from being fully prepared to work under authentic conditions. One student described the difference:
“It was a slight difference simply because, in the classroom area, mostly you are dealing with the theory. And now in the internship or in the field, we were doing the practical session.”
Another explained that school could teach the steps of a professional process without providing the experience of actually participating in that process as part of a team:
“Because in school you learn the steps, you don't, you're not exactly a part of like a team doing those steps. So it was really great getting the experience outside in the professional world.”
Actual projects introduce clients, budgets, other trades, changing schedules, safety concerns, mistakes, competing priorities, and consequences. Being able to juggle these additional demands and make on-the-spot decisions is key to growing into professional responsibilities.
“Internships are priceless.”
Employers were particularly emphatic about work-based learning. One participant summed it up simply:
“Internships are priceless.”
Internships and other applied experiences allowed students to see how buildings actually get built, work with professional teams, exercise judgment, and gradually take greater responsibility. They also helped students determine whether the career they were preparing for was, in reality, one they wanted.
Importantly, participants were not asking colleges to abandon theory. They wanted stronger connections between theory and practice—and they often wanted those connections earlier. One professional recommended:
“I’d reduce how much focus is placed on just theory and bring in more real life experiences.”
Students similarly described wanting more authentic projects, professional development, interdisciplinary learning, and exposure to the constraints that shape real work.
Good work has to survive contact with reality
Perhaps the central theme running through the architecture and construction findings is adaptability. As one professional put it:
“Construction sites are constantly changing. Whether materials, schedules or unexpected issues can throw off a plan in an instant.”
That helps explain why the preparation challenge described by participants wasn't simply a lack of knowledge. In fact, some employers specifically identified technological fluency as a strength of newer workers. The challenge was around integration: would new graduates be able to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills while also communicating with other tradespeople, responding to the unexpected, protecting everyone's safety, staying on schedule, and recognizing when they need more information?
For colleges and employers alike, this suggests that preparing people for good work requires more than ensuring they possess the right knowledge. Students need opportunities to use that knowledge in practice, in situations that approximate the complexity of professional work.
A credential provides an important foundation. But doing good work requires that individuals integrate that foundation with judgment, curiosity, communication, creativity, humility, safety, and adaptability. The challenge is not simply preparing students to know what good work requires. It is giving them opportunities to practice what it takes to achieve good work.
